International Traditional Karate Federation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Traditional Karate Federation ( ITKF ; known in Japan as Kokusai Dentō Karate Renmei ) is an international umbrella organization for traditional karate founded by Hidetaka Nishiyama .

On September 27, 1974, the International Traditional Karate Federation was founded under the name International Amateur Karate Federation. In 1986 it was renamed the International Traditional Karate Federation. The whole time it was about who gets recognition from the IOC . The WUKO or the ITKF.

The IAKF held its world championships like the WUKO almost at the same time and place. 1975 in California and 1977 in Tokyo , Japan. Further championships and competitions followed.

To make karate Olympic, Nishiyama sent a request to the International Olympic Committee in 1976. At the beginning of the 1990s, the ITKF and the World Union of Karate Do Organizations (WUKO) were supposed to join forces for this purpose, but this was not realized and represented a major setback for karate at the Olympics . The WUKO and the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF) then formed a confederation, which three years later (1993) was recognized by the IOC as the only world association for karate sport, the World Karate Federation (WKF).
