International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology ( IUBMB , English for International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology ; to 1991 International Union of Biochemistry , IUB ) is an international non-governmental organization that deals with biochemistry and molecular biology busy.

The association is dedicated to the worldwide promotion of research and teaching in biochemistry and molecular biology and pays special attention to areas in which the topic - from the point of view of the IUBMB - is still in its early development.

Collaboration and belonging

International Association for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)

The IUBMB is similar in its aims and methods to the IUPAC (International Association for Pure and Applied Chemistry). Both organizations work closely together and are often referred to as IUPAC-IUBMB in one letter.

German Member Society (GBM)

The German member society (Adhering Body) within the IUBMB is represented by the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM) e. V. represented.

Nomenclature Committee (NC-IUBMB)

The IUBMB has a nomenclature committee: the Nomenclature Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (English; abbreviation NC-IUBMB ). This means in German "Nomenclature Committee of the International Association for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology". The Nomenclature Committee gives recommendations for the naming and classification of enzymes with the help of so-called EC numbers , whereby an attempt is made to align this classification system according to the chemical reactions that are catalyzed by enzymes.

Remarks

  1. The topic of the NC-IUBMB - "Recommendations on the nomenclature and classification of enzymes based on the reactions they catalyze" ( https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sbcs/iubmb/enzyme/ , accessed 2020-04) overlaps z . B. with the disciplines of general chemistry (catalyzed reactions), biochemistry (catalyzed reactions of enzymes) and molecular biology (enzymes). Therefore there is cooperation with other bodies, e.g. B. with the JCBN ( IUPAC-IUBMB Joint Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature ), the "IUPAC- and IUBMB-related Commission with regard to Biochemical Nomenclature". The NC-IUBMB committee is only part of the IUBMB, while the JCBN joint commission is responsible to both IUPAC and IUBMB ( https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sbcs/iubmb/nomenclature/ , accessed 2020-04 ).
