International standard for plant protection measures

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Standard for Plant Protection Measures (ISPM) is defined in the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

background

The material of wooden packaging is often made from cheap raw wood. This is generally suitable for harboring unwanted pests and larvae, which means that they can be transported around the world. As a result of the trade flows, the pests reach every continent within a very short time.

Wood treatment

The ISPM specifications stipulate the necessary measures according to which this raw wood is to be treated before it is used as wooden packaging, so that no undesirable pests go with you as "stowaways" on trips. After that, the requirement is to subject the wood to be treated to heat treatment and to maintain a core temperature of 56 ° C for at least 30 minutes.

Fumigation with methyl bromide was also possible until August 31, 2006 ; this pesticide has not been approved in the EU since then.

Wooden packaging made from compressed wood does not need to be pretreated, as it is pressed into shape at high temperatures. They are therefore ISPM15-compliant for production reasons.

Marking of the wooden packaging material

The wood treated in accordance with ISPM specifications must be permanently marked. The marking includes a country code, a regional code and a further registration number. In addition, information on the wood treatment carried out is given.
