The International Slavery Museum in Liverpool opened in 2007 as a slavery museum with a focus on the enslavement of West African people. The museum is part of the National Museums Liverpool .

The Merseyside Maritime Museum , opened in 1980, dedicated part of its exhibition to the slave trade . In 2007, on the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade ( Slave Trade Act 1807 ) in the UK, it became the International Museum of Slavery. The museum focuses on the transatlantic slave trade and its consequences. Based on the West African cultures and the terrible ship passages, the conditions in the Americas are described. In addition to efforts to abolish slavery, contemporary racist stereotypes are also addressed.

The museum opened on August 23, 2007, the annual International Day to commemorate the slave trade and its abolition .
