Internetworking
Internetworking is the term used to describe the connection between two or more computer networks . In this context, the term network refers to locally restricted networks ( LAN ).
Routers enable or regulate the flow of data between the networks. You are u. a. responsible for choosing the path of the data through the various networks ( routing ). By using several routers, several networks are often combined to form a large-scale network ( WAN ).
Internetworking allows networks of different networking technologies to be connected, e.g. B. Ethernet with Token Ring . Internetworking uses a common network protocol for this purpose , which can be used on all supported networking technologies. Such a protocol forms the network layer (layer 3) of the OSI model , which represents the individual networks as a uniform network.
An example of internetworking is the Internet . The Internet supports various networking technologies, including Ethernet and Token Ring. The Internet Protocol (IP) is used as a common protocol . Internetworking is only possible with an active internet connection .
