Inverter adapter for D-Sub connector

An inverting adapter (English technical term gender changer ) connects two cables with the same connector . It is used because socket to socket and plug to plug cannot be connected, and consists of a 1-to-1 cabling of the connections (pin 1 on the opposite side connected to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, etc.). Since the same numbers are connected to one another, the pins or sockets cannot simply be connected straight through, but instead a page change takes place in the internal structure.

Null modem cables and adapters also carry female gender on both sides, but have the send pin on the opposite side connected to the receive pin and vice versa. So RX and TX are crossed.

In the German language, too, the English term gender changer is usually used instead of an inverter adapter . It is derived from the "male" plugs (English male plug ) and "female" socket (English female plug from): Using the gender changer so you can a female connector to a male convert and vice versa.
