Iona is a given name that is based on the island of the same name in the Inner Hebrides between Ireland and Scotland and means "the protected". Therefore, Iona is mainly used as a female name in Ireland, Scotland and English-speaking countries. Iona or in spelling Iòna is also occasionally used as a male first name.

In addition, the name can be found in Albanian, Ancient Roman, Italian, Romanian, and New and Ancient Greek. In Greek, Iona also means "purple jewel".
