Irish twins

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Irish twins is a disparaging slang term that means two siblings who were born within 12 months. Usually it is only used for children who were born in the same calendar year or are in the same school class. The reason for this name is the relatively high birth rate in Ireland . This is attributed to the high proportion of strictly religious Catholics who, because of their faith, rarely resort to contraceptives or other family planning measures . This allows many children to be born in quick succession.

The term dates from the 20th century and is not used in Ireland itself.

Similarly, Irish triplets refer to three children born within two years.
