Islands on the Air

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Islands On The Air (IOTA) is an amateur radio diploma program. The aim of the program is to promote worldwide radio operations with islands.

The IOTA program was launched in 1964 by Geoff Watts, a British shortwave listener (registration number BRS 3129) and editor of the British DX News Sheets (DXNS). Since 1985, the program has been run by the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB). Roger Balister, G3KMA is the responsible IOTA manager.

The focus is on radio links with stations on islands. For this purpose, the term "island" was precisely defined in the RSGB rules and an island list was published. The program is based on the competitive idea of establishing radio contacts with as many islands as possible from all continents.
