Ismail El Gizouli

Ismael Abdel Rahim El Gizouli is a Sudanese environment and energy specialist . From February to October 2015 he was acting head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Life

Ismael El Gizouli holds a BS in Mathematics and Physics from Khartoum University and a Masters in Statistics and Operations Research from Aston University in the UK . In 1971 he joined the Ministry of Industry in his home country, Sudan . In 1980 he took over as Head of the Information Systems Directorate in the Ministry of Energy, until he was General Director of the Sudan's National Energy Ministry from 1988 to 1992. He worked as a consultant for various organizations, including UNEP and the African Development Bank . In 1998 he joined the board of directors of the Council for the Environment and Natural Resources, where he ensured the cooperation between the United Nations ( UNDP ) and the Sudanese government in order to implement joint projects on climate change .

El Gizouli became a member of the IPCC in 2002 as Deputy Chairman of Working Group III ( Climate Protection ), and was appointed Vice President in October 2010. It participated in the fourth assessment report and the associated synthesis report . In parallel to his activities at the IPCC, he was Vice President of the Faciliative Branch of the Compliance Committee of the UNFCCC from 2005 to 2007 and was then Chairman of the Committee until 2009. After the early resignation of Rajendra Pachauri on February 24, 2015, Ismail El Gizouli took over the acting leadership of the IPCC as Vice President until the new president was elected in October 2015.
