The Istana Merdeka (in German Palace of Freedom ) is a palace complex in Jakarta , Indonesia .

History of the building

Construction began in 1796 when Pieter Gerardus van Overstraten took office as Governor General of the Dutch East Indies, and it was completed in 1804. Initially, the building was used as a place to relax for a Dutch businessman.

In 1821 it was sold to the Dutch colonial administration.

The building served temporarily as the official residence of the Governor General and the Indonesian President after independence in 1946. In 1950, the first Indonesian President Sukarno resided in the building. After Sukarno, the palace was no longer used as an official residence, but was still used as an official place of work.
