Julius Maternus
Iulius Maternus (occasionally Iulianus Maternus ) was a Roman trader of the first or early second century AD.
Probably around 90 AD, profiting from the good relations with Rome, he traveled from Leptis Magna to the Garamanten . According to Marinos von Tire , he then traveled for four months with the King of the Garamanten to a land called Agisymba , where he saw many rhinos . Since they did not live in North Africa at that time, it is often assumed that he reached the area around the northern Lake Chad , even if other localizations (such as Aïr , Tibesti etc.) exist.
