Iulius Pollux
Iulius Pollux ( Greek Ιούλιος Πολυδεύκης Ioúlios Polydeúkēs ; * in the 2nd century in Naukratis , Egypt; † allegedly at the age of 58 in the 2nd or 3rd century) was a Greek scholar of the "Second Sophistics " who worked in Athens around 190 as a grammaticus . He came from Naukratis in Egypt.
The judgments of his contemporaries are disparaging, Lukian of Samosata calls him ignorant and a "student of rhetoric". He has received a lexicon consisting of ten books, the Onomasticon , whose meaning in the multitude of information it contains, e.g. B. about theater masks, musical instruments and harmony, the Attic judiciary, but also about private life in antiquity, z. B. children's games and equipment.
