Jewish cemetery in Tykocin

The Tykocin Jewish Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in the Polish city of Tykocin in the Podlaskie Voivodeship .

Before the Second World War , Tykocin was one of the most important centers of Polish Jewry . At that time around 50% of the population were Jews. After the invasion of 1941, the German Wehrmacht established a reign of terror to which the Jewish population fell almost completely: 1,400 Jews were murdered in the forest near the Łopuchowo district in 1941.

The cemetery, which is located on a hill west of the city, is the oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in the Podlasie Voivodeship. It was rebuilt in 1522, and the Jewish community was founded in the same year . The oldest surviving tombstone dates from 1791. During the Second World War , the cemetery and the surrounding wall were destroyed as a result of the Tykocin massacre .
