Jewish cemetery on Wassenbergstrasse (Emmerich am Rhein)
The Jewish cemetery on Wassenbergstrasse is a Jewish cemetery in Emmerich am Rhein , a town in the Kleve district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).
history
In 1629 the Jews of Emmerich were given permission to create their first cemetery between the city wall and the city moat , which was occupied from 1629 to 1826. The younger burial site on Wassenbergstrasse was occupied between 1826 and 1928. 80 gravestones have been preserved here, including 13 gravestones that were moved here from the old Jewish cemetery in 1827 due to the structural expansion of the harbor basin. In 1944, the central part of the cemetery was almost completely destroyed by an aerial bomb. In Emmerich there is another Jewish burial place in the communal cemetery.
