JOSM ( listen ? / I ) (Java OpenStreetMap Editor) is a geodata editor that was developed for editing OpenStreetMap (OSM). According to usage statistics, JOSM accounts for around 67 percent of OSM edits. JOSM is an offline editor for advanced users. Audio file / audio sample

technology

JOSM is a Java application and can therefore be used on many different operating systems. With many Linux distributions, it can be installed directly from the standard package sources.

The program has a modular design and an interface for plug-ins , for example for importing geo-referenced images, i.e. photos from digital cameras that are provided with GPS information about the location at the time of recording. Another plug-in, livegps , allows GPS data to be read in live via a connection to a gpsd server.

There are over 140 additional modules.

surface

In the editing view, representations of different data can be superimposed on different levels, the transparency of which can be adjusted. For example, an editable representation of existing (vector) map data can be loaded into one level and, using various additional modules, for example an orthophoto or point traces from path records of a GPS device , so that the map data can be aligned and traced when editing the map data. Publicly accessible geodata sources in WMS , TMS or WMTS format can also be integrated and displayed as a separate level.

A palette of tools and configurable dialog boxes allow the editing of vector map objects (waypoints that are connected to paths, which in turn can be closed to form surface objects) and their metadata . Special tools and commands facilitate the massive processing of map points according to more complex patterns. A template system facilitates meaningful tagging , i.e. the assignment of properties to map objects. Before uploading to the OSM database, the edited map data are checked for spelling and plausibility and warnings are issued if necessary.

JOSM is (as of June 2018) localized in 38 languages .

development

It was developed by Immanuel Scholz in connection with the OpenStreetMap project; the project is currently being supervised by Dirk Stöcker.
