Jacob Carstensen (* 1966 ) is a Danish biologist and ecologist. He is a professor at Aarhus University .

Life

Carstensen completed a master's and doctorate degree in 1990 and 1994 . He is Professor of Marine Systems at Aarhus University. He gained fame with his work on hypoxia and oxygen deprivation (English deoxygenation ) in the seas, in particular on "death zones" in the Baltic Sea. Together with colleagues, including Daniel J. Conley , he was able to examine the oxygen-poor zones in the Baltic Sea caused by overfertilization by measuring water columns and thereby show dramatic developments that arise from the interplay between global warming and nutrient inputs. He assumes that the only realistic option for the recovery of the Baltic Sea is a significant reduction in nutrient inputs.
