Jaiku was a microblogging application . It was also defined as a social network or a mostly publicly accessible diary on the Internet. Private individuals, organizations, companies and the mass media used Jaiku as a platform for distributing short text messages on the Internet. Jaiku was introduced to the public in February 2006 and quickly gained international popularity.

The company was acquired by Google Inc. in 2007 . In October 2011 it was announced that the service would be discontinued on January 15, 2012. Google wants to concentrate more on the social network Google+ .

As a result, Google released the software Jaiku was running with as open source under the Apache license 2.0.
