Company founder Jakob Bengel around 1875

Jakob Bengel was a chain and jewelery factory in Idar-Oberstein an der Nahe.

history

Until 1920, the Bengel company, founded by Jakob Bengel in 1873, specialized in the manufacture of watch chains and chatelaines (pendants for pocket watches). In the 1920s and 1930s it advanced to become one of the leading manufacturers of Art Deco style jewelry . Instead of gemstones, the plastic Galalith was used . The Deutsches Museum in Munich dedicated an exhibition to the products of the Bengel company in 2004. The Bengel fashion jewelry collection became known and documented by the Handel collectors.

At the end of the 20th century, production was switched to all kinds of jewelry chains and Art Deco products. The buildings have been incorporated into a foundation and house an industrial museum. It shows the development of the company's mechanical production (from 1870 to 1990), economic development, social structure and working conditions. The machine hall houses 40 chain machines, some of which have been built by the company, and are 100 years old.
