As Japanese mat to special designated filter that in swimming pools and garden ponds are used for filtering the water. Japanese mats are approximately 3.5 cm thick sheets of rough polyester- based single threads. Due to this structure, they have a large surface area, which offers a settlement surface for bacteria , which can remove undesirable substances from the water.

In a system of filter chambers, Japanese mats are mostly used in the second chamber. First, coarse impurities are removed from the water, for example using filter brushes, before biological filtration takes place through the bacteria on the Japanese mats.
