Japan network

Tensioning a Japan net

Japan nets are special nets that are used for scientific bird and bat trapping. They consist of a very fine network, which is hardly noticed by the animals to be caught. Since the nets are permanently set up at the location, you only catch the animals that happen to fly into it. Legally, the nets are mainly used for ringing birds .

Scientific use

Japan nets are used by almost all scientific bird stations. To protect animal welfare , the nets are dismantled when not in use or, in the case of stationary nets, are tightly wrapped in order to prevent accidental catching. The nets are checked in short periods of time so that captured birds do not stay too long in the net. They are also a source of danger for small and particularly active birds, which can strangle themselves in too large-meshed nets.

Illegal use

Japanese nets are still used today - despite the bird trapping ban - in the European Union to catch small birds, songbirds or migratory birds for consumption or for keeping in cages. The main areas of application are above all the Italian Northern Alps, the Pyrenees and parts of the Benelux countries.
