Jaume Gomis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jaume Gomis is a Spanish theoretical physicist.

Gomis received his PhD from Rutgers University in 1999 and was a postdoctoral fellow (and Sherman Fairchild Senior Research Fellow) at Caltech with Hirosi Ooguri . In 2004 he received the European Young Investigator Award from the European Science Foundation, which he turned down to do research at the Perimeter Institute . He is also at the University of Waterloo .

He deals with non-perturbation theory dynamics in string theory and gauge field theories, their dualities and the holographic formulation of quantum gravity. In 2009 Gomis developed a theory of magnetic observables (based on Gerardus' t Hooft ) in supersymmetrical Yang-Mills theories, with which phases of these theories can be distinguished and with which he could explicitly show S-duality . Among other things, he dealt with non-relativistic strings (superstrings, superbranes).

In 2019 he received the CAP-CRM Prize for his broad spectrum of important contributions to string theory and strongly coupled gauge field theories, including pioneering work on the use of nonlocal observables, the exact calculation of physical quantities in quantum field theory, and the uncovering of the non-perturbation dynamics of gauge field theories (laudation). He received the Ontario Early Research Award in 2009.
