Jean-Louis Michel (engineer)
Jean-Louis Michel works as an engineer at the French Marine Institute, Institut français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer ( IFREMER ). He and his team and Robert Ballard's team discovered the wreck of the Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland. With the help of video and ultrasound technology, they were able to locate the wreck at a depth of 3800 meters.
Michel was instrumental in the development of the Sonar Acoustique Remorqué (SAR for short), a towable side-view sonar that was used on Ballard's first expedition to the Titanic and was able to produce images of the ocean floor of unprecedented quality at the time.
