Jean Street School

The Jean Street School is a former school and now residential building in the west of the Scottish city of Port Glasgow in Inverclyde . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

history

As a result of the introduction of compulsory schooling in 1872, several schools had to be set up in Port Glasgow. After the capacity of the newly built schools was exhausted, the Jean Street School (1884) and the Clune Park School (1887) were built. The architectural office H. & D. Barclay provided the design . In 1885 the school had 728 students. In 1898 another floor was added to enable further education. In 1908 an independent secondary school was built in Highholm. By 1975 the number of students had dropped to 221, which was partly due to a relocation of residential areas. The school was later closed and the building was converted into living space.
