Jehan Lagadeuc (* in the 15th century in the Manoir de Mézédern near Plougonven ; † in the 15th century) was a Breton philologist, Romance scholar , Celtologist and lexicographer.

life and work

Lagadeuc was a priest in the Diocese of Tréguier . Knowing about the Catholicon of Johannes Balbi of Genoa (an alphabetically arranged Latin dictionary), Lagadeuc wrote a trilingual Breton- French-Latin dictionary in 1464 (published 1499) and called it Catholicon . It is one of the very first alphabetic dictionaries of a modern language, but was mainly used for learning Latin (and secondarily for learning French) by Breton priests. The Catholicon appeared in three editions and has been reprinted several times until recently.
