Jericho is first mentioned around 1650 when the 'Jericho Tavern' was built. The term Jericho was used to refer to accommodations on the outskirts where travelers could linger when the city gates were already closed.

In 1790 the Oxford Canal was completed, which is directly adjacent to Jericho. It connected Oxford with Coventry and enabled the rapid and efficient transport of coal. In the years that followed, the population of Oxford rose rapidly in the course of industrialization. Jericho mainly housed workers from the surrounding factories and the university.

In 1812 William Carter founded an iron foundry, which was renamed Eagle Ironworks under his successor Charles Grafton . William Lucy took over the company in 1860 under the name Lucy's Ironworks and supplied the local market and a. with agricultural machines and lamp posts. In early 2006, the old factory buildings had to give way to an extensive construction project along the Oxford Canal and were completely demolished.

In 1826 Oxford University Press moved from Broad Street to Walton Street in Jericho, where it still maintains its main building today. Two of the largest employers were based in Jericho.

In 1869, thanks to a generous donation from Thomas Combe, St. Barnabas Church was consecrated. Combe had little influence on the design of the church, but decreed that the church should offer space for more than 1,000 believers and should have a modest exterior, but a solid interior.

Jericho became known beyond the city limits of Oxford through the Inspector Morse's novel The Dead of Jericho (1981) by Colin Dexter .
