Jewel Changi Airport Waterfall

The Jewel Changi Airport is a complex of buildings on the grounds of Singapore Airport . It opened on April 17, 2019. The Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie designed the combination of a futuristic building and exotic green spaces, which in future will not only attract air passengers, but also residents and tourists. The heart of the 14,000 m² leisure attraction is the so-called Canopy Park. A large glass dome is to surround the park and at the same time become the airport's distinguishing mark. The dome will connect Terminals 1-3.

The centerpiece is the highest indoor waterfall in the world, Rain Vortex , which is surrounded by forest. Other attractions include the Shiseido Forest Valley , a five-story indoor garden, and the top-level Canopy Park with gardens and recreational facilities.

history

Jewel was designed to maintain the airport's status as the premier air traffic hub in the Asia-Pacific region. It was first mentioned by Lee Hsien Loong at the 2013 National Day Rally as part of Changi Airport's long-term plans to double its capacity by the mid-2020s and "create more opportunities for Singapore and Singapore".

It was built over the Terminal 1 parking lot, Jewel expanded the Terminal 1 arrivals hall and baggage claim area by 70%, and handling capacity is expected to increase from 21 to 24 million passengers a year. Jewel was opened by Lee Hsien Loong on October 18, 2019. During this time it had received 50 million visitors - around 300,000 visitors a day - and thus exceeded its original goal of 40 to 50 million visitors for the first year.

Shiseido Valley

The Shiseido Forest Valley is a collaboration between Shiseido and the art collective teamLab from Japan. It is one of the largest indoor gardens in Asia. It extends over five floors and is approximately 22,000 square meters. It is located in the heart of Jewel Changi Airport. It is home to around 3,000 trees and 60,000 shrubs of 120 species that live in high-altitude tropical forests around the world.

Rain Vortex

The Rain Vortex, sponsored as HSBC Rain Vortex, is the largest and highest indoor waterfall in the world at a height of 40 meters. Circulating rainwater is pumped onto the roof in order to fall through a round hole at a rate of up to 37,850 liters per minute into a pool in the basement. An acrylic funnel on the bottom prevents splashing water and isolates the sound of the cascade. The toroidal roof has more than 9,000 pieces of glass stretching over 200 by 150 meters, with a sloping ocular serving as the mouth of the waterfall as a "continuation of the building ... completed in liquid form". At night, the circular walls of the waterfall become a 360-degree stage for a light and sound show.

To avoid excessive humidity in the jewel, the flow of the waterfall alternates between cascades and rivulets that reduce air turbulence. The design process by the WET design engineers involved testing a fifth scale model and a full-size partial prototype.

Canopy Park

On the top level of Jewel, the 14,000 m² Canopy Park is home to recreational and leisure attractions. About half of the total landscaping is in Canopy Park , including two gardens: Topiary Walk and Petal Garden. The Topiary Walk features animal-shaped topiaries on every corner, while the Petal Garden has seasonal flower displays. The park includes a suspension bridge called the Canopy Bridge, which sits 23 meters above the ground and offers panoramic views of the rain swirl. The 50 meter long Canopy Bridge has a glass floor in the middle part that offers a view of Level 1 of Jewel. Canopy Park is home to nine food and beverage vendors. Aloha Poke, Arteastiq Bistro, Burger & Lobster, Herit8ge, Prive, Rumors Bar & Grill, Tanuki Raw, The World is Flat, and Tiger Street Lab are all on the fifth floor between the exit and entrance to Canopy Park.

These include:

  • The park is also made up of two mazes located at the east end of the jewel known as the Hedge Maze and the Mirror Maze. The Hedge Maze is Singapore's largest with 1.8 m high hedge walls. The maze has gates that can be pushed in to change the path of the maze. It ends at an elevated watchtower that offers a bird's eye view of the entire maze. The mirror maze is under the dome with plants branching out across the top of the maze. The maze uses mirrors and various reflections.
  • The Sky Nets, also known as Manulife Sky Nets for sponsorship reasons, offer play facilities for children, including a bouncing net and a walking net. The jumping net is 250 meters long and suspended 8 meters above the ground at its highest point. A separate 50 meter long walking net enables visitors to look down 25 meters at Jewels Level 1
  • The Discovery films have four integrated films: two tubular films and two sliding surfaces. The entire structure is on an incline, 3m high at one end and close to 7m at the other end, allowing visitors to see the forest valley and the rain swirl. The Discovery Slides were designed by Carve and built by Playpoint in Singapore. The Discovery Slides were designed by Carve and built by Playpoint in Singapore.
  • The Foggy Bowls are four concave bowls between 30 cm and 65 cm deep that people can jump into while fog is being released to create the illusion of playing between clouds.

Changi Experience Studio

The Changi Experience Studio is a 3000 square meter space with interactive games and displays about the history of Changi Airport and offers visitors a look behind the scenes of the airport.

hotel

A hotel in Jewel with approx. 130 rooms, operated by the international hotel brand YOTEL, opened on April 12, 2019. It is the second YOTEL hotel in Singapore after the opening of the YOTEL on Orchard Road in 2017.

An “integrated multimodal transport lounge” offers ticket sales, boarding pass collection and luggage transfer service in a single location. Early check-in facilities allow passengers to check in and drop off their luggage up to 24 hours before regular check-in times. There are special facilities for passengers and air ferries.
