Jiří Dohnal

Jiří "Jirka" Dohnal (born June 23, 1963 in Liberec ) is a former Czech badminton player .

Athletic career

Dohnal began badminton training in 1974 with the club TJ Slávie ODPM Liberec. In 1979 he moved to Spartak Pavlovice, where he was able to celebrate his first successes. In the season 1979/1980 he was with the team of Spartak Czech junior champion. In the same season, he won silver in men's doubles with Jiří Dufek and his first adult medal. In the following season he was runner-up in singles. In doubles, this time with Ladislav Prokš, it was only enough for bronze. In mixed doubles, the quarter-finals were the final destination for the pairing Dohnal / Řezníčková. In 1983 he moved the entire badminton department to TJ Start Liberec.

In 1984 he was drafted for basic military service in Hradec Králové , connected with the change to the local club VŠTJ UK. Back in Liberec he could not build on the successes of the pre-army period for a long time, although he was always in the top 12 of the Czech and Czechoslovak associations.

It was not until 1998 that he achieved another medal success. Together with Ladislav Oros, he won bronze at the Czech championships. A year later he finished ninth in the European mixed rankings.

Jirka Dohnal still lives in Liberec today.
