Jo Ann Garrett

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jo Ann Garrett (* 1954 in Chicago ) is an American soul singer .

Jo Ann Garrett grew up on West Side Maxwell Street with her seven brothers until their family moved to Robert Taylor Homes . A 15-year-old student at DuSable High School in Chicago, she won a talent contest at the Regal Theater, not a bad achievement considering Chicago's vast talent pool. “Stay by My Side”, a big regional hit, was created during the recording. Follow-up recordings were Dee Clark's “You Can't Come In” (March 1967) and “Thousand Miles Away” (1968) with The Dells as backing vocalist, which was not mentioned on the record. In 1969 she left Chess Records and continued to record with other record companies until 1973.
