joanneum racing graz is an association founded by professors and students at the FH Joanneum in 2003 that designs and manufactures racing cars in order to take part in annual Formula Student or Formula SAE competitions.

structure

The team, whose members call themselves Weasel , consists of students from various courses of study at the FH Joanneum , whereby the technical management is reserved for students of the automotive engineering course. Other tasks such as public appearance, media design, design and business plan are taken on by members from the journalism and public relations, industrial design or management of international business processes. joanneum racing graz is a volunteer-based Formula Student team that is organized as a club.

Project jre

With the preparations for the 2018 season, one of their old vehicles was planned as a project for the future. Therefore, the jr09 model , whose powertrain was defective, was completely restored and built as a future-oriented, electrically powered project vehicle in cooperation with the Kreisel electric company . It is used to collect experience and instructive lessons for the future development of electrically powered Formula Student vehicles.

Vehicle history

2004: The jr04 was joanneum racing graz's first attempt to take part in a Formula Student event. The competition took place in Silverstone. It could be driven with a fundamentally different approach such as all-wheel drive and supercharging in an otherwise rear-wheel drive, uncharged field of starters.

2005: For reasons of lightweight construction, all-wheel drive was dispensed with this season and the main focus was on realizing a competitive racing car called the jr05. In the second race of the vehicle, the team was among the leaders.

2006: With the vehicle jr06 from 2006, the team managed to clinch overall victory at the competition in Italy and to climb the world rankings further.

2007: The jr07 was able to maintain the high level of its predecessor and received the first self-constructed partial carbon rims for this season.

2008: In this racing season, the self-developed, one-piece carbon rims were used for the first time in the jr08 bolide model.

2009: The jr09 was supposed to be the last supercharged vehicle for the time being

2010: model name jrX

2011: The jr11 was designed with the main focus on weight reduction, which however led to problems with the robustness of the racing car during the season.

2012: The jr12 marked the beginning of the era of the two-cylinder AMG engine. Together with the racing team from the University of Karlsruhe, the Weasels won a competition from AMG, which enabled the two winning teams to work together to develop an engine for a Formula Student vehicle. For this purpose, the basic engine known from the A45 AMG was redesigned to a two-cylinder with direct fuel injection, which was a novelty in the racing series. The advantages of this concept were evident in its robustness, since the Weasels had also charged this engine, like every previous one. The result was a lot of power and high torque, but this increased the vehicle weight.

2013: The jr13 racing car is the first jrg vehicle to feature an aerodynamic package.

2014: Due to the curriculum change at the FH Joanneum from diploma studies to Bachelor-Master-System, the vehicle from the previous year was expanded in terms of aerodynamics to the maximum permitted in the regulations and received additional optimizations and the name jr14.

2015: The jr15 is one of the best vehicles for the students. He convinces them with his driving performance, his reliability and the engineering knowledge put into him.

2016: This racing car was also used to contest races in Japan and the USA (Michigan). The jr16 was the last vehicle with an AMG engine since the collaboration ended.

2017: With the jr17, the new drive train was introduced in cooperation with the company [ROTAX]. Since the basic engine was originally used in a snowmobile and had a continuously variable transmission, the students developed an adapted transmission with a carbon housing.

2018: With this vehicle, the main focus was on eliminating the weak points and the engineering design. In Europe and again in Japan, the team was able to face the racing competition.
