Joe Chang

Joe Chang ( Chinese  常 虹 , Pinyin Cháng Hóng ; * 1956 in Shenyang , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese cartoon director.

Life

Chang studied at the Lu Xun Art Academy in the People's Republic of China and at Tama University in Japan. In 1990 he moved to Canada, where he began his animation film career in 1993 with Natterjack Animation . He took on smaller jobs in series such as Kleo, the flying unicorn (1996–1997).

From 1998 he worked as an animator and director with the National Film Board of Canada . He released his first film as a director in 2002 with The Chinese Violin or Le violin chinois . This nine-minute, wordless animated short film tells the story of a father and young daughter who leave their native China and go to Canada with nothing but their violin.

After The Chinese Violin , he went to China, where he became a professor in the animation sector of the Chinese Academy of Arts. In 2003 his directorial work The Life of Pan Tian Shou was released . This five-minute cartoon, which was shown at the Festival d'Animation Annecy 2004 , for example , pays homage to the Chinese painter Pan Tianshou (1897–1971).
