Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Medal in gold
The Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Medal in gold has been made available by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation FVS since 1972 to honor extraordinary achievements by personalities or services to the preservation of the European cultural heritage , supported by supranational sentiments and humanitarian endeavors to be distinguished.
The Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Medal was awarded at the suggestion of the Board of Trustees for the Hansian Goethe Prize and with the approval of the FVS Board of Trustees.
The foundation decided to discontinue the award in 2005 due to the discussion about the Hanseatic Goethe Prize .
The Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Medal should not be confused with the Goethe University Medal of Honor .
