St. John's shoot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
St. John's shoot of the common beech

The second leaf shoot of some deciduous trees, such as oak , red beech and some types of maple , within a year is called the St. John's shoot (also called August sap) ( prolepsis ).

Due to the effects of the weather, leaf buds that are laid out for the next spring sprout around the date of St. John's Day on June 24th. This often differently colored, mostly strong leaf and branch growth is important to compensate for damage caused by eating, for example by cockchafer , and is also of great importance for forestry .

In the figurative sense, “Johannistrieb” is also a joking name for the increased sexuality of older women and men.
