John Edward Hollister Montagu, 11th Earl of Sandwich (born April 11, 1943 ) is a British businessman and politician.

Life

John Montagu is the eldest son of Alexander Montagu , who renounced the title of Earl of Sandwich in 1964, and his first wife Maud Rosemary, nee. Peto. He inherited the title from his father in 1995. With the passage of the House of Lords Act 1999 , he lost, along with all other Hereditary Peers, the automatic seat in the House of Lords. However, he was elected as one of the 92 elected Hereditary Peers to remain in the House after the reform. He sits as a crossbencher and speaks primarily about international development cooperation and asylum issues.

Taking advantage of the notoriety of one of his ancestors, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich , known for popularizing the sandwich in Britain in the 18th century, he opened a sandwich shop, Earl of Sandwich. This is in Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World Resort , Florida. The restaurant is a collaboration between him, his son Orlando Montagu and Robert Earl, the founder of the Planet Hollywood chain.

Lord Sandwich has been married to Caroline, daughter of Reverend Perceval Hayman, since July 1, 1968, and they have three children:

  • Luke Timothy Charles Montagu, Viscount Hinchingbrooke (* 1969)
  • Hon. Orlando William Montagu (* 1971)
  • Lady Jemima Mary Montagu (* 1973)
