José Agustín Arango

José Agustín Arango Remon (born February 24, 1841 in Panama City , † May 10, 1909 ) was president of the provisional government junta after the US-backed Panama's declaration of independence from Colombia .

José Agustín Arango was the son of Cuban-Panamanian parents. He worked as a businessman and banker. For financial reasons, he was very interested in building the Panama Canal . Because of this, he joined the US-backed independence movement that wanted independence from Colombia. After the US military occupied the area in 1903 and proclaimed the independent state of Panama, Arango was installed as the provisional interim president of the government junta and was in office until February 20, 1904. He was Foreign Minister until his death in 1909.
