José Calavera Ruiz

José Calavera Ruiz (born October 23, 1931 in Melilla ) is a Spanish civil engineer.

Calavera studied and received his doctorate at the later Polytechnic of Madrid, where he also became a professor. He also founded and headed the building research institute Instituto Técnico de Materiales y Construcciones (INTEMAC).

His projects include the Fuente Dé cable car and the Monumento al Indiano in Cantabria, the roofs of the Real Madrid Sport Pavilion and the Mahou brewery in Madrid and the national cattle market in Torrelavega . He also built numerous industrial buildings. He published several textbooks on civil engineering.

In 2015 he received the International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering from IABSE, of which he is a fellow. He is an honorary doctor of the Polytechnic of Valencia. In 2014 he received the Spanish National Prize for Civil Engineering, in 1999 the fib medal and in 1990 the Edoardo Torroja medal. He was a member of the fib commission precast concrete parts. In 1982 he became a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute .
