Josef Herk (born August 7, 1960 in Knittelfeld ) is an Austrian entrepreneur and politician (ÖVP) and has been President of the Styrian Chamber of Commerce since 2011. Since 2012 he has also been Vice President of the Austrian Economic Association and since 2017 regional group chairman of the Styrian Economic Association.

Life and work

In 1979, Herk passed the matriculation examination at the HTBLA Steyr with a focus on automotive and mechanical engineering. In 1982 he passed the master's examination in the bodywork trade and supplemented this in 1985 with the master's examination in the automotive mechanic trade.

In 1980 he joined his parents' business, a bodywork and paint shop in Knittelfeld, and did various internships during this time until he finally took over the family business in 1988.

Politics and Economic Association

Herk began his political career in 1995 as a councilor in the city of Knittelfeld, where he worked until 2007.

In 1995, Herk became city group chairman of the Knittelfeld Economic Association, followed in 2002 as district group chairman Knittelfeld, until he finally became regional group chairman of the Styrian Economic Association in 2006. Since 2012 he has held the office of Vice President of the Austrian Economic Association.

In July 2017, Herk was elected regional group chairman of the Styrian Economic Association with 98.3 percent.

Chamber of Commerce

From 1991 to 2011 Herk was a member of the bodybuilder committee. From 1995 to 2000 he was deputy state guild master and from 2000 to 2011 state guild master or chairman. From 2000 to 2011, Herk was chairman of the Knittelfeld district office and the Murtal regional office. Between 2005 and 2011 he was a delegate to the economic parliament of the Styrian Chamber of Commerce as a branch representative for trade and crafts. From 2007 to 2011 he acted as chairman of the trade and crafts division of the Styrian Chamber of Commerce and from 2010 to 2011 he held the office of federal department chairman of the same division. On February 7, 2011, Herk finally took over the office of President of the Chamber of Commerce from Ulfried Hainzl and was officially sworn in on February 9, 2011 by the President of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, Christoph Leitl.

In addition to promoting entrepreneurship, his personal focus is primarily on education and promoting young talent. For example, he campaigned to bring the EUROSKILLS 2020 professional European championships to Austria and implemented a project with the TALENTCENTER, which was awarded the “World's best project in the field of education and training” at the ICC Congress in Rio de Janeiro Title "Champion of Innovation".
