The Regenstein Library is the largest library of the University of Chicago , part of the University of Chicago Library .

The Joseph Regenstein Library is named after the industrialist and philanthropist Joseph Regenstein . With over 4.5 million volumes, the “Reg” is one of the largest libraries in the world. Since it opened, it has housed a Special Collections Research Center with around 265,000 rare books, manuscripts and university archives . The Research Center was founded in 1953 and integrated into the library in 1970, which has a total area of approx. 176,000 m² and whose maximum extension is 105 meters (east-west) and 125 meters (north-south).

history

The Joseph Regenstein Foundation provided the university with US $ 10 million to build the library in 1965. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1968 and opened in 1970. The total cost was $ 20.75 million. Walter Netsch and his architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill from Chicago designed the limestone building, which was built in the architectural style of Brutalism .

The library has a ground floor, four floors and two basement floors. Each floor consists of a large room with numerous desks, several smaller, enclosed study rooms, and contains numerous shelves with reference books, and a number of lockers. Floors 1 and 2 are connected by a small atrium that adjoins the reading rooms on both floors. The book archives are located on floors 1 to 4 in the western part of the building, separated from the large reading rooms. This means that the room temperature in the archives can be kept lower than in the rest of the building, which is beneficial for the conservation of the books. In the eastern part of the building there are 220 study rooms for university employees.

Due to the excessive number of books in the archives, the University of Chicago Board of Trustees decided in 2005 to build an additional library, the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library , for 42 million US dollars . This is directly connected to the Regenstein Library; The latter is also the only entrance to the Mansueto Library, which can thus be seen as part of the Reg . The new building has an oval roof made entirely of glass. The basement is used to store the books, which are fetched by a robot arm from a depth of up to 15 meters using a fully automated storage system. This system makes it possible to store 3.5 million books in 1/7 of the conventional room volume. The architect of the Mansueto Library is the Chicago-born architect Helmut Jahn .
