The Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada ( JR Astron. Soc. Can .; French. Journal de la Société royale d'astronomie du Canada ) is a bi-monthly, peer-reviewed science magazine published by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada ( RASC).

It reports on Canadian astronomers, activities of the RASC centers and other association matters, articles with a historical, educational or biographical background, as well as scientific articles. The magazine was first published in 1907 and has been published continuously ever since.

Originally the magazine was planned as information about the processes in the RASC centers, for protocols and similar documents. Some of the authors enjoyed discussing current topics, so that some technical topics were also discussed. In particular, some of the corresponding members were well-known US and British astronomers who occasionally published a technical paper. The journal owes its reputation among astronomers to these contributions.

Publication and history

Written material was produced from the beginning. The date of the meeting of eight men is recorded in Toronto on December 1, 1868, when they announced the formation of the Toronto Astronomical Club. Later meetings were also recorded. However, only the publications that were made after the entry in the register of associations in 1890 as the Astronomical and Physical Society of Toronto are considered to be the predecessors of the journal. These were:

  • 1890-1901 Transactions of the Astronomical and Physical Society of Toronto
  • 1902-1903 RASC Selected Papers and Proceedings
  • 1904-1905 RASC Transactions
  • 1906 (no publication)
  • Since 1907 Journal of the RASC

Since then the journal has been published without interruption.
