Juanita Banana

Juanita Banana is a song written by Tash Howard and Murray Kenton in 1966 and initially recorded by The Peels . The song reached number 8 in the German charts, where it lasted seven weeks. In Belgium the song became a number one hit . A German-language version with a text by Günter Loose comes from Billy Mo . Another German-language version was recorded by radio presenter Mal Sondock .

The song tells the story of the daughter of a Mexican banana farmer who aspires to become an opera singer. In town she made her breakthrough to become a star, whereupon her father sold the farm and bought a guitar. The refrain is based on the song Caro Nome from Giuseppe Verdi 's opera Rigoletto .

The song was covered several times, including in the same year by Henri Salvador .
