The IG Metall youth education center Schliersee is a facility of the youth recreation and education homes of the IG Metall gGmbH based in Frankfurt am Main.

prehistory

The first development of the property of today's youth education center on the Unterleiten in Schliersee took place in 1936 with the construction of a gymnastics country home, a training facility for gymnastics teachers . In a report by the Reich Association of German Gymnastics, the two directors Thekla Malmberg and Mathilde Funke are known as “responsible educators and capable teachers in the field of gymnastics”. An express use of the gymnastics school for National Socialist purposes can neither be proven nor refuted today. Gymnastics, as stated in the above-mentioned report, is a “valuable educational enterprise”, the schoolgirls are subject to “student education in the National Socialist sense”. Although no more information about the gymnastics home can be found after 1940, according to the information provided by Kurt Weber, the former technical director of the youth recreation and education home at the time, operations continued until the property was purchased on June 3, 1954.

1954 until today

The establishment of the IG Metall youth recreation and education home took place on October 7, 1954. On October 9, the first youth representative course took place.

The house offered space for 47 people and was mainly used as a rest home for young workers. Only in the spring and autumn weeks, when the holiday rush was not so great, did youth representative courses, youth group leader seminars, vocational trainer courses and also international seminars take place.

In the course of the 1980s and 1990s, the youth recreation and educational home developed more and more into a youth education center.

In 1994 a possible closure and sale of the education center was discussed at board level. Volunteers and full-time employees of IG Metall youth protested together with older union members against the closure of their only remaining youth education center. The arguments for continuing the educational establishment were made known in countless letters, signature and protest actions. The board of directors then decided to keep the training center and to fundamentally refurbish or rebuild it in accordance with the requirements of the educational work. After the five-year renovation phase, the youth education center was reopened in October 2000. The education center is equipped with two seminar units, the associated workgroup rooms, a creative area and an outdoor area that is included in the educational work.
