Juha Metso (* 1965 in Kymi ) is a Finnish photographer who works both as a newspaper and art photographer .

Career

In 1991, at the Lahti Institute of Design , Metso began taking photographs of nature and birds in particular. He produced numerous illustrations for books on artists and countries, as well as illustrated books. Metso also makes photo exhibitions and performances.

Metso worked as an artist in various groups. He was a member of the Kotka Art Gallery from 1992 to 1995. Together with Timo Mähönen and Olli Haapio, he founded the Kotka Photographic Center in 2005 .

In 2013 Metso published three photo books , including about the rock band Sielun Veljet , together with music editor Vesa Sirén from Helsingin Sanomat . Metso described the adventures of the actor Ville Haapasalos, who was very successful in Russia, in a book "But you don't believe in the text" together with Kauko Röyhkä. Together with Juha Vakkuri he published the work “Voodoo - African Daily Life” (2014), which provides new insights into the Voodoo religion of West Africa.

Juha Metso's works are exhibited in several museums and were among others. a. purchased by the Finnish Government, Salon City Art Museum, Helsinki City Art Museum, Lappeenranta City Art Museum and Finnish Museum of Photography.

Prizes and awards

Juha Metso was Photo Finlandia Finalist (1990, 1992, 1996), Press Photographer of the Year (2000), Best Reportage Photographer (2004), Portrait Photography (2014) and Best News Photo of the Year (2016). He was named Cultural Personality of the Year by Kymi (1992), received the Kymi Region Culture Prize (1992), the Southeast Finland Art Prize (1998), the Kymeenlaakso Photography Art Prize (2010), and the Kotka City Culture Prize (2011) and the Kotka Prize (2014).
