Julián María Speroni (born May 18, 1979 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine soccer goalkeeper who was under contract with Crystal Palace from 2004 to 2019 .

Career

Dundee FC

Speroni began his career at Club Atlético Platense , in his home Argentina. After only one year as a professional, he was drawn to Europe, where he signed a contract with the Scottish club FC Dundee . In Dundee, he became a crowd favorite and cult figure, which is particularly due to his carefree on the lawn.

Crystal Palace

When Dundee got into financial trouble in 2004, Speroni was sold to Crystal Palace for £ 500,000 . In his first Premier League season he started as the first goalkeeper and was in the starting line-up in the first six games. After a few bad performances, however, he was pushed to the bench by the Hungarian Gábor Király . Towards the end of the 2006/2007 season he established himself as the first choice in goal and received a new 3-year contract with Palace. He also received the Player of the Year award from Crystal Palace supporters that season . In the 2009/10 season Crystal Palace got into great financial difficulties and got ten points deducted. The survival of the club was only ensured on the last day of the season. For his role this season, Speroni was again awarded the Player of the Year award , becoming the first player to be recognized for three consecutive years.

On December 10, 2010, he extended his contract for another 3½ years. He spent a total of 15 years at "Palace" before his engagement ended after a total of 405 competitive appearances for the club at the end of the 2018/19 season.

National team

In November 1998, Speroni was nominated to the squad for a friendly against Japan's U-20s in Tokyo . In December 1998 he was named to the pre-selection squad for the 1999 South American U-20 championship. Coach José Pekerman ultimately did not call him into the final squad.

Personal

Speroni grew up with his parents and younger brother in Buenos Aires . He is married and has a son.

Because of his grandfather's origins, he also has an Italian passport.

Speroni has his own restaurant in Purley called Speroni's , which is very popular with Crystal Palace fans.
