Wilhelm Herrman Julius Schlegel (born September 20, 1825 in Potsdam , † July 8, 1884 in Berlin ) was a court landscape painter in Potsdam.

Life

After studying at the Berlin Academy of Arts , Schlegel moved to Italy from 1847 to 1855 . It was there that Alfred von Reumont , ambassador of the Prussian legation, established Schlegel's first contact with the Prussian royal family. 67 watercolors and drawings by him are in the graphic collection of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg .

With photographic accuracy, Julius Schlegel created mainly Potsdam vedute and views of various Italian locations. The later Emperor Friedrich III. awarded him the title of court painter in 1859 .
