Youth and virgin associations were founded in many places in Germany from the beginning of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. These associations were created in connection with the evangelical revival movement . However, there are and were also Catholic youth and virgin associations.

Youth and virgin associations historically served religious and educational purposes. They were mostly denominational. Associations and successor organizations that still exist today are also active in customs (such as processions , carnival customs ) and in sport.
