Köpmangatan is a street in the old town of Stockholm ( Sweden ). It is the earliest recorded street in Stockholm and it still bears its original name today. It was first mentioned in 1323 as "in medio vici dicti køpmangatu". Its name goes back to the fact that merchants (in Swedish köpmän ) had their stalls on this street . In the Middle Ages, the street connected the central square of Stortorget with the square of Fiskartorget, which was outside the eastern city wall. Mostly German traders lived here and they also had their stalls here. The square is considered to be the actual marketplace and the center of Stockholm in the Middle Ages.
