Kadın Efendi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kadın Efendi ( Ottoman قادين افندى) is a title awarded to the first four wives of the Ottoman Sultan , from Sultan Mehmed IV .

The Baş Kadın Efendi (Basch Kadinefendi) was the first wife of the Sultan and after the mother of the ruler the second ruler over the sultan's harem . If the sultan's mother (Valide) was not alive, she had the harem and could even get involved in political affairs.

The rest of the sultan's wives also had certain powers in the harem and could, albeit to a limited extent, interfere in politics. But they did not have as much say as the Baş Kadın Efendi.
