history

Plan of the temple (see text)

The temple was built on the occasion of the enfeoffment of Asano Naganao ( 浅 野 長 直 ; 1610–1672) with the domain Akō in 1645 as a temple of the clan. Even after this branch of the Asano clan was extinguished, the temple remained connected to the family.

investment

You enter the temple in the south through the simple temple gate ( 山門 Sammon , 1 on the map). It comes from Akō Castle and was moved here when it was demolished at the beginning of the Meiji period . Once you have passed the gate, the main hall is in front ( 本 堂 Hondō , 2). On the right side is the bell tower ( 鐘楼 Shōrō , 3) with the "silent bell" ( 鳴 ら ず の 鐘 Narazu no kane ). According to legend, when Asano Naganori ( 浅 野 長 矩 ; 1667–1701) died, she remained silent for some time out of mourning. On the left side you can see the large zazen hall ( 座 禅堂 , 4) for Zen meditation, to the left of it the small Hōon hall ( 報恩 堂 , 5), which is reminiscent of the temple founder.

In the north you get to the inner area of the temple, in the middle of which there are memorial stones ( 義士 墓 所 Gishi bosho , 6) for the 47 samurai in an enclosed rectangle . Behind it you can see the museum (M) of the temple, which u. a. refers to the 47 samurai.

The northwest of the complex is occupied by a cemetery (F).
