Kai Kristiansen (Designer)

Kai Kristiansen (* 1929 ) is a Danish furniture designer .

Life

Kristiansen finished his apprenticeship as a carpenter in 1947. Then he attended the furniture school at the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen until 1951 . There he learned from Kaare Klint and largely adopted his understanding of ergonomics . He then went on a journey as a journeyman to learn from various masters.

In 1955 Kristiansen opened his own design workshop. His most important piece for his career, the teak dining armchair "# 42" (also known as the "Z-chair" due to the shape of the frame), he designed in 1956 for Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik, which is still owned by the family today. He made other designs for Magnus Olsen , Fritz Hansen , Feldballes Møbelfabrik, Kaagaards Møbelfabrik a / s, Tarm Stole og Møbelfabrik and Vildbjerg Møbelfabrik. For IKEA he designed the armchair “Troika” in the 1950s, other sources based on “Troja”.

From 1956 to 1965 he organized a furniture fair to stimulate an exchange between Danish designers. From 1966 to 1970 he was co-organizer of the Scandinavian furniture fair (Skandinavisk Møbelmesse).
