Kaisertunnel (Argonnen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Imperial Tunnel is located in the Argonne in France, west of Verdun . It is a 350 meter long war tunnel built during the First World War. Today there is a museum at the north entrance of the tunnel. The tunnel has been closed since 2012 due to safety deficiencies. As of February 2016, due to the unclear financial situation, this could not yet be renovated and reopened for visitors.

history

The Kaisertunnel was built at the beginning of 1916 by the 9th Lorraine Infantry Regiment 173 ( St. Avold , Metz ). Starting from the south bottom to the north, under the Kronprinzenhöhe through to the north bottom (also known as the Jägerschlucht) a more than 300 m long, mined tunnel was built. The installation of the infrastructure ( kitchens , cisterns , a first aid room and a generator room ) started in March 1916. The tunnel represents the center of a network of further tunnels and trenches in the central argonnas Lines) and the Ortliebtunnel. The tunnel system enabled the German soldiers to move over hundreds of meters in a geographically unfavorable area, undetected by the enemy.
